If you have sensitive skin, you know that it can be unpredictable. The causes of sensitive skin are many, and often it can be challenging to identify exactly what's irritating your skin. Irritant dermatitis is a condition that causes skin to react to a particular irritant in a product. The most common irritants are fragrances, which are found in many skin and hair care products, as well as in detergents and soaps.
Allergens are a whole other class of irritants that can cause inflammation and rashes for those who have allergic contact dermatitis. Common allergens include nickel (found in most eyeglass frames) and latex.
Establishing a good daily skin care regimen will help you to minimize sensitive skin reactions. Cleanse with warm (not hot) water and a mild, non-soap cleanser. Look for fragrance-free cleansing products such as Eucerin Gentle Hydrating Cleanser, since fragrances are such common causes of reactions. Avoid harsh, grainy scrubs and stiff, scratchy loofahs. These can also irritate your skin.
When choosing a moisturizer, look for one that doesn't contain a fragrance (even the sweetest-smelling lotion can cause a reaction). Be wary of "botanical" ingredients, too; just because an ingredient is natural doesn't mean that it won't irritate your skin. And unless you're using a line of products designed to work together, don't layer several different products on your skin. If you do have a reaction, this can make it difficult to identify which product caused the problem.
All Eucerin products are clinically proven non-irritating for sensitive skin, so no matter which product you choose, you'll be doing the right thing for your sensitive skin.
