What causes adult-onset blemishes?
Stress, hormones and even the wrong cosmetics can prevent your adult skin from looking clear and healthy.
Stress Though ordinary day-to-day stress does not cause blemishes, it can indirectly help cause a problem. Heres how the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) explains it: Stress can have many physiologic effects on the body, including changes in hormones that may theoretically lead to acne. In some cases the stress may actually be caused by the... lesions, not the other way around! If the [blemishes are] being treated effectively, stress is not likely to have much impact on the majority of people.
Hormones During puberty, hormones cause an increase in the activity of the sebaceous glands which, in turn, leads to blemishes as oil and dead skin block the hair follicle. Later in a womans life, changes such as discontinuing oral contraception, becoming pregnant or entering the fluctuating hormonal levels of perimenopause and menopause can have the same unfortunate effect.
The Wrong Cosmetics and Skincare Products Sometimes adult blemishes are caused by using too much makeup, or the wrong kind. Many kinds of makeup contain oil and are known as comedogenic. They block the pores and form comedones, sebaceous follicles blocked with sebum, dead cells, tiny hairs and bacteria, which are more commonly known as blackheads and whiteheads.
Using the wrong kind of makeup to cover up blemishes can actually make the problem worse which is why its so important to choose only non-comedogenic products for your problem skin.
The AAD further advises:
Heavy foundation makeup should be avoided. Most [problem skin] patients should select powder blushes and eye shadow over cream products because they are less irritating and non-comedogenic.1
